Over the next few days, Sam completed several rehabilitation exercises. With the help of his nurses, Sam was able to get out of bed each day. He met many new people over the course of his rehab. All of them greeted Sam with handshakes and smiles. The oddest character that Sam encountered had to be an older gentleman by the name of Peter. what separated Peter from everyone else was the fact that he was older. Of all the people Sam met, Peter was their elder by at least 20 years. Sam liked Peter, not because he was older, although that was one factor that attributed to their relationship, but because of how he dealt with others. Everyone looked up to Peter. Even though he wasn’t in charge, Peter acted as though he was superior to everyone. This wasn’t a bad thing though, he really was. He knew more about illnesses, medications and most importantly, about life. He had lived a full life. Well, so it seemed to Sam. He still didn’t know much about the people around him. He used his interactions with those around him to read everyone but, it wasn’t enough. Very few people spoke to Sam personally. Sure, they told him that he was doing a great job with his rehab, but, no one opened up to him. Sam just wanted one person to tell him about themselves, and to ask about him in return. That was, until Sam and Peter became friends. It started off as jokes between each other. Peter would comment on the other nurses and doctors to Sam. Sam enjoyed it. They were very snide but coming from Peter, they couldn’t be taken seriously. He was the grandfather that Sam always wanted. He told Peter that he didn’t know his grandparents, that they had passed away before he was born. So, Peter took on the task. He would sneak in extra food or special deserts for Sam. Occasionally, he would bring a few beers and the two would talk about their lives. Sam learned that Peter had been at the Hospital, which was known as The Hospital, since he left med school, which was about 40 years. His immediate family had all passed away, and he never married. Sam felt bad for Peter. He couldn’t relate to the loss of family, and didn’t want to delve into his love life. One day Sam asked Peter if his parents were still alive and where they might be, but Peter fell silent and just left the room. Sam became convinced that his parents were gone, or that they just left him at The Hospital and never returned, gave up hope on him. Whatever, he thought. He never really cared for them anyway.
