Transmissions to Mobius

Page history last edited by erin 14 years ago

Hey there Mobius, Echan here. I've done it again. Here is a link to my latest venture in wiki-dom. I'm not sure if you ever check this page anymore. It appears as if the most recent request for Darshan was a year ago...

Also, I miss you :)  You are wonderful! Lots of love from my family (recently expanded to 8, including chickens) to yours!

Yer Mobiusness,

Michelle here, just returned from NY, dropin' a line to relay some info. The following is also in an email I had sent you a few days ago:

Office of Graduate Admissions

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

DePaul University

990 W. Fullerton Ave., Suite 1600

Chicago, IL 60614-2458

is where the first letter of recommendin' goes. It is for their Philosophy program which is sweetly unique because it emphasizes ze historicity of modes of thought and close reading of actual texts. In statement of purpose, I am saying that me and DePaul were made for eachotha because the architecture of their program is such that I'd be able to pursue the study and integration of clasic/literary phil and the phil of neat folks like Nietzsche, Foucault, Wittgenstien.

Deadline = Dec. 15th.

They don't require a form er nothin'. They just want you to rap about me on a piece of paper, free style-esque, and then send it their way.

Oh, and if you have received emails requesting recommenations on me behalf from Stanford, Brown or UC Riverside, just ignore those. I'm not applying for them any more.

And one more thing: If you have spam filters on your psu email, please adjust yer settings so that support@applyyourself.com can get through to you.

Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you!

Rich

No clue where to put this but here goes with an email I sent to you and Mark

Mark and Rich

I have you penciled in to talk about nanotechnology in (a fys about the transformative effects of technology) this coming Tuesday 09/09. If this is OK, I am thinking each of you could take about 20-30 minutes somewhere between 11:15 and 1:10. In* 307 HAMMOND http://www.our.psu.edu/soc_maps/hammond.html','Intent',625,425,1)">

    • (http://cede.psu.edu/)*** Ideally, Mark would talk, Rich would talk, and then I would talk and end with the assignment which they could start if time permits. Mark and Rich would not have to be there when they were not talking.

This is the FYS that I will convert to studying nanotechnology. I am anxious to start thinking through this process and one way to start is to consider what we would say to students about nanotechnology if we just had one short time slot to introduce what it is (Mark), what the social and ethical issues are (Rich), and how we might go about design for something where the unknowns are so significant (Richard).

The students have a consumer product redesign of single use camera (market push) and I am also asking them to do a small presentation on the design of nanotechnology (technology push). In it they will have to explore a promising new nanotechnology and consider prospects for the design of products and the possible risks entailed. Before they graduate they will probably find out how wrong they were. They will present briefly the next week. Since I have 23 students I can only give about 4-5 minutes, so it is a modest exercise.

I reread our proposal and was pleasantly surprised. Apart from one murderous paragraph that I wrote, it is very well written. I attach the RTF version again. I am not 100% sure it is the version submitted, but I think so. In it we propose an honors course in the spring 09. That needs to be on the books within a few weeks to get enrollment of honors students. Can we meet soon? I am free a lot MWF but can make some TuTh times

cheers

Richard (Devon)

Blue Fish! Aloha (for some reason I imagine you in Hawaii - does Amy have family there?). Jamie here :). We are settling into Cornell well. The place has a deafening buzz running all the time, somehow enhanced (not deflated) by the educational disparities so rampant in these rural parts. I'm basically renovating this farm-house we're living in (which has a trail from the backyard gardens to a beautiful nude-sunbathing waterfall-filled swimming hole.....), while cooking, doing laundry, making websites, writing a literature review titled "The Rhetoric of Neurons", and interviewing for biotech jobs. Felix is swimming through the world with increasing ease and gracefully manipulating all forces that approacheth. He has four teeth and likes to be chased, to knock things over, to blow kisses, and to tell jokes (he finds them to be hilarious). McKenzie's grad program has her entranced. I am interviewing this week for a green chemistry company and for a microbiology job at Cornell working with poop. I think I would enjoy that. Poop in the 21st Century is really the epitome of Derrida's trace - ever residual and reminding of what "left it" behind. And yet, 21st century poop disappears with so little thought from the "developed" world.

greetings mobius! it's been a while since metaprogramming, but i've been thinking about and experiencing synchronicity more and more.... lastest example: i've been working through philip k. dick's collection, and just finished 'do androids dream...' last night as well as been browsing the site Brainsturbator during all the time i've NOT been in law school : ) ... when i decided to randomly log-in to the ol' wiki and lo and behold! links to http://electricsheep.org/! just returned from post-grad eurotrippin- nothing like the combination of psychadelics and travel to change your perspective on things! been tapping into the noosphere to learn more about fractals and ways to fight facism daily ever since.

hope all is well,

p.s.- this made me think of the psyops manual and the attention-sink.

Mobius, have ye read "The Watchmen"?

Ceridwen!

Been waiting on the Angels of Avalon, waiting for the Eastern Glow! And you are!

And here it is! Yes, mobius has come across nThe Watchmen but not properly sufficiently reverently ecstatically grokked in intertwingularity, so thankee ever so much! Mobius linkee in his collective noospheric dream word salad on his wiki 4 August 2008. Should there be a local wiki gathering of like minded fleshbots witnessing the miracle? I met with the Silver Circle and they are both silver and circular and link us to the Silver Cord connecting us, all2gether now...

you've probably run across this, if not: http://electricsheep.org/

yes, i used to run it night and day on my office machine. now I just google it!

here's a nice image frm it:

Hoping Mobius had a great vaycay. Would love to have a darshan soon via Skype. I will be on vacation all next week, but back July 14th.

Mobius,

working on my dissertation proposal (tentatively titled "Meditating Scientists: Experience, Symbol, and Politics in the Transformation of the Sciences of Mind")

and if you have any time at all, I'd really benefit from a consultation. I had a pretty big breakthrough last night and it seems that technology is going to be an important theme for me--have you read this guy Don Ihde and his technoscientific postphenomenology? If you have a moment--here's a very short statement about my research question, method & interests. Meditating Scientists.doc

Yo Mobius,

Greetings from Roma. I still haven't been able to see that Bernini statue that you were talking about - the one with the gold spires shooting down. The museums around here are open at the wierdest hours. Just read that thing on turn on, tune in, drop out. Va Biene. Last weekend I went to Florenece and Sienna and saw Michealangelo's David. And in the next coming weeks, after a project on the Tiber River, I will be heading to Santorini, Greece for some Rand R. How is the sabbatical?

-GoNZo

'Zo!

Thanks for sending wyrd of your doings and undoings. Sabbatical allows me to concentrate my attention in even greater freedom. I have had some minor health issues that have "slowed me down", but they also keep me focused on the mitigation of unnecessary suffering so evident everywhere on this planet. Mobius,

Do you have time to get together this week sometime before Thursday? I have to give a talk on LSD and I would like to pick your brain. And you'd be proud, I was able to convince a few Luddites that technology is nothing to be feared, that shoes and houses and chairs and books were also technology. How far I've come!

Got some mobius synchronicity for you to add to your collection of mobius synchronicity stories! Today I was re-watching the youtube video I linked to on the wiki way back on 9/17 when I noticed that the person who posted the video on youtube was named mobius32. I didn't even realize it at the time. Also, I have my ENGL 15 students wiki'ing this semester, so I will keep you posted on how it goes (so far so good).

-thepanamaslider

Mobius,

suggestions added. Letter will be overnighted snail-mail style on Saturday after final readover/edits.

Ok I decided to start at the top. Thanks so much for turning me onto the wiki. Showed it to my class today and infected a colleague as well. This is going to be fabulous....I'm sorry we didn't get to meet up during the break....love, Mme. Pompadour de Pittsburgh (I now have really big hair like Morrissey in the 80s)

Heading out to Rome tomorrow. Miss ya Mobius. - GoNZo

Been thinking of you as I read Cosmic Trigger Volume 2: Everytime I read the phrase "Gonzo Ontology", I think of landscape architecture, the police state, and power lifting instead of Hunter S. Thompson.[ You've tagged the noosphere with the force of your being! Continue to welcome and honor all these learning experiences, and the mutation shall continue. Safe Journey!

P.S Do visit an Internet Cafe and drop some sketches on us, please. I formally request one of The Ecstasy of St. Theresa by Gianlorenzo Bernini (1652). Left transept of Santa Maria della Vittoria (17th century) in Rome. post it here, and we can stand bidding!

do we here admit ourselves at top or bottom? so, here is my question, sage of the rotunda, echoing detroitwide:

I have a bunch of perplexities lately surrounding what I guess one might call category distinctions within the field of writing instruction. Let's for the moment define writing instruction as: teaching students to string together symbol sets/images/sounds in order to communicate. Let's for the moment define communication as: conveying "essential" information to another being. Let's define "essential" as: that which is necessary to preserve another being's life (at one pole) and, at the other, that which is necessary to support another being's happiness. Weirdly, the two may be the same, at a most basic level (hunger). Is the baby's cry open source?

How do we define definition? Do we defer to others? Or write our own? In the American Heritage Dictionary one of my published sentences is, bizarrely, quoted under the verb "to profess." Isn't it the case that [[language is the ultimate "open source"]]--particularly languages that do not have official governing bodies ( e.g., l'Académie Française)?

The gesture of the dancer is the dance. The gestures we now perform in order to write--consulting memory of the neurobiological sort, memory of the digital sort, and engaging whatever peculiar haptic knowledge we have, stored in gut or inner ear or ???--how should we go about teaching them?

well, yr. friend gig.

you know, the thing about wiki is it is all toward the one. i dunno. how do we be, but connect? i have had the most hard time connecting lately, but today vowed only to demand of myself that i breathe--and, weirdly, it is easier, as a result, to not be so guilty/fraught/problematized about connecting.

laterz,

gig

hello, Mobius. Would it be ok if I posted my final a little later this week, either wednesday or thursday? Though I have been thinking about it a lot, it has been difficult to actually sit down and type it up. With all of my finals crammed into a few days, I wouldn't be able to put my full effort into it if it were due tomorrow. Anyway, please let me know if it would be acceptable. Thanks. -Proteus

Proteus: Thursday is fine. Take your exams, then get writing! This problem is what pushed me toward continual writing, a process for writing everyday ( e.g. wiki). Then, when it comes time to put together a project, you can compose what you have already written and imaged into a more polished and coherent form. This tends to make your daily writing more modular, shareable, & remixable as well. SO: look first to thine own wiki! `mobius

Hola Mobiused. I was wondering three things... 1) did you get a chance to experience the pink or orange CD yet? 2) how goes the novel and when can it be read by Ceridwen? 3) the Naked Lunch project fascinates me...when is it going to be in Websters?

(1) Not yet!; (2)novel to be revised in o8, to be shared in 08. (3) NL volume will be out summer 09, with Paris event to announce etc - mobius

- Ceridwen

Hi Mobius. Thursday you said you'd respond to my final project proposal. I know you've got a lot on your plate so it may have been buried behind a thousand other tasks, so I thought I'd remind you briefly. Thanks! -Unfinished

I'll check it out - mobius

Unfinished

as long as your remix has a dub refrain that makes clear its Rastafarian allegiances in honor of "versionists" and the orgins of DJ culture in Jamaica, then yes aye! I love the project, which have pasted into a box below. Please keep us posted with lists of texts to remixed etc. ANd please do explain why you choose the texts that you do, and why and how you remix them the way you do.

I am around all break if you want to play music. I have a synth, amp, electric guitar, a Djembe, flute, and of course a computer :) My delay pedal is, er, delayed: I lent it to a student last year....mobius

Mobius,

I did see your post about my final project, and I actually have a copy of Swann's Way that I started to read, plus Bergson's Matter and Memory. I may actually read the latter first. As for floating, I would have to talk to you about it when I come back. I'd like to, but I have a few concerns. -Proteus

Mobius,

Tomorrow's bad for me, I don't know what I was thinking when I told you I could come to office hours in the morning. That's when I get all of my work done for class. Totally not happening. What about Friday? I'm free after 11, we could go get coffee or lunch or something. Oh, and I'm reading Diary of a Drug Fiend but I started it before I realized it was on your "texts mentioned in class" page.

Yours in syncronicity,

Mobius,

What was the website you told me to look up today in class? I wrote down zapcan or zapcar, but I must have been mistaken.

It was [http://www.zapworld.com/electric-vehicles/electric-cars/xebra-sedanZapworld] - I was mistaken! That tricky Zebra

Ah Mobius, how I miss thee.

VALIS is on my lap and I am awaiting Tuesday. I had an idea about the day I'm speaking about Crowley - do you think I can focus entirely on the first three pages, comparing them to other "genesis" writings, rather than deal with the whole text? I feel like it's too dense to do the entire book any justice, but an examination of the first few pages would be interesting for the whole class.

-Ceridwen

Mobius:

A frightening notion was conjured during therapy session today. Could prescribed doses of mental fog, growingly perfected by pharmaceutical companies, inhibit one's ability to have sufficient emotional holdings in order to truly have empathy for a cause? What kind of amnesia would one suffer upon a titration of the prescribed mental fog? Concerns for one's ability to detach further, given eventual rise in emotional holdings, are extremely crucial to the decision of whether or not to move forward with a heavily monitored withdrawal. Is this moving backwards in the art of Zen; detachment?

-AZ

AZ-

Not in my experience. In my own case, depression blocked the very existence of all other emotional modalities, and it was only after I decided to be healthy that I learned about all these other emotional states besides anger, depression and ecstasy. Anti-Depressants seem to have helped me feel other states besides these, and with therapy I evolved a way of feeling them and talking about them without getting too freaked out. At first I couldn't believe how weird a mixed emotion like tragic/comic felt under my old way of feeling, but I have learned to love the mixtures and not insist on feeling any particular way. And I have left meds far behind. Then, with Diamond Mind as my practice I see just a little bit more of reality and experience life in its strange fullness only by seeing, with Avalokiteshvara, the emptiness ( aka impermanence) of all things. You should consult your prescribing physician about how to avoid Serotonin Withdrawl Syndrome, and take it gently!- mobius

I want to float but I'm ignorant as to how to get into a time slot. Help! Also, I read this and thought of you. -Ceridwen

Ceridwen:

email chronictronic@gmail.com for floatation navigation! - mobius

the "transitions to mobius" page seems to be all me.

I'm paying attention from afar, though I realize how incredibly inadequate that is. The trouble comes from this thing I can't get away from...

Tuesday, though, I'll be sufficiently awake, aware, and awe-ful in class to make up for some of the neglect I've been heaping upon the sacred. -Ceridwen

Ceridwen! Some Doggerl for you:

We drop performative abracadabra utterances, mutterances,

toward that pixel'd, jpeg'd cell!

"Heal!" we say, "Heal!",

while dogged Future pulls us,

drags us

arms straining at leash long in absentia

the mute eternal specific beat of meat,

"That clock keeps time with a whip!"

Awakening again to our Orders: Love, and Do what thy Wilt!

An epic (middle) finger poking at his chest,

Chronos is mastered not master,

Mister!

Take this Twister!

Whose shape is curved, hellbent on

The refrained chime of bliss

A mouth bending toward weeping

crowds out Hell

Mobius

Yo, mobius! if you get the chance, check out the snippet of Ginsberg's Wichita Vortex Sutra on my poetry page. I love what he's saying here about language, and the uses of language. I trust that you've read this poem because it totally sounds like everything we've been talking about this semester and last with White Magic language to counteract the Black Magic. Have you read this?! Yours in syncronicity-Echan

Oh yes Echan, though I had not read it for years, (maybe ever},

yes Ginsberg's icaro drops White Magic Science. I have used it to brew some language medicine for Ceridwen, which means that I listened to the sound of Icaros influencing Ginsberg and vice versa, as well as the rhythms I brought back from Peru myself, did some blending toward some mending. Perhaps we should add the Vortex to the syllabus? - mobius

Herr Doktor, I saw this and thought "Mobius would understand".
